Oct 1, 2021 – PEI Staycation Day 1

Melissa and I originally planned to travel to Nova Scotia this weekend, but we had to cancel our reservations because of COVID-19. PEI’s Chief Public Health Officer asked islanders to avoid all unessential travel.  So, we opted for a PEI Staycation instead.

Our first day took us to the Canadian Potato Museum & Antique Farm Machinery Museum in O’Leary and after we were done learning far too much about potatoes and their history, we set out to see the famous Bottle Houses- Maisons de Bouteilles in Wellington.  Unfortunately, the Bottle Houses were closed to the public after Sept. 29, like many island businesses that rely on tourism they are seasonal.   We took a few photos outside of the Bottle Houses and then made our way to Cape Edgmont before sunset.  It was Melissa’s first time in this part of PEI which is largely Acadian and therefore French.  I’ve motorcycled this region in PEI a few times and it’s always rewarding and so was today.

As we were near Summerside, I wanted to make a stop at Slemon Park, which has a number of historic planes on static display.  On Sept 24 this CC-115 Buffalo, a search and rescue aircraft, made its final flight after five decades of service and is now part of the collection.  I took a few photos of this new addition and could not resist a gratuitous shot of the CP-107 Argus’ massive tail section

For supper, we treated ourselves to a tasty dinner at Hunter’s Ale House in Charlottetown.
