Oct 14, 2023 – National Airforce Museum of Canada

Last week Melissa drove from PEI to Ontario to visit family and friends.  On the way to Kingston to stay with friends,  I visited the National Airforce Museum of Canada in Trenton.   Something I should have done decades ago.

Established in 1984, the NAFMC is dedicated to preserving and telling the history of Canadian military aviation. The Museum is dedicated to the men and women of the RCAF.  It consists of an indoor museum with over 75,000 square feet of display space next to a 16-acre air park.  Set aside a few hours to explore the NAFMC.  Unfortunately, our time was limited, so I was not able to see all these great planes and helicopters.

Overall, this experience was a wee bit underwhelming as I have seen most of these aircraft before in other museums.  However, for someone not acquainted with Canada’s Airforce heritage, it is definitely worth visiting. The one standout feature was a restored Handley Page Halifax bomber – those are very rare and this is the first time I have seen one.  The Halifax was pulled out of a lake in Norway, most of the airframe suffered severe damage and it required extensive reconstruction. The Halifax consists of mostly remanufactured parts, some made from fibreglass and others scavenged from various sources.  It is not airworthy, but it is an impressive sight to see.

If you are an aviation geek, I highly recommend a visit to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Ontario.  It has an impressive collection of aircraft, many airworthy, from various nations and theatres of war.  I think it’s the best aviation museum in Canada.
