Yesterday I grabbed two cameras and drove out to Point Prim Lighthouse, PEI looking for seals. Unfortunately all the seals were too far out in the water to get a decent shot. So, I tried to make the most of my time there and take photos of the melting sea ice. Some of these ice clumps were bigger than a home, if they had been any larger I’d be tempted to call them icebergs.
Most of these images were taken with vintage film era lenses mounted on a Sony A73. The lenses I used were a Canon FD 24mm f/2.8, Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm f/2.8, Olympus Zuiko 50mm f/1.4 and a Super Takumar 135mm f/2.5. I really enjoy shooting with these decades old lenses. Not only are they very affordable with a unique rendering, they cause one to slow down and carefully focus by hand. These old lenses have character, a quality I sometimes find lacking in clinically accurate modern lenses.
The other images were taken with a Lumix G9 and Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm f/4-6.3. I won’t say which images are which, but spot the ones that look like they were taken with telephoto lens and have a 4/3 aspect ratio – those were taken with the Lumix G9.
Point Prim Lighthouse, perched on the outermost tip of the peninsula, is not only the Island’s oldest lighthouse but also the only circular brick lighthouse in Canada. Point Prim is named a ship that carried over the initial Scottish settlers to Prince Edward Island.
