Photos from yesterday’s solar eclipse. These were taken in Cavendish, PEI, where we had totality for 1m 14s starting at 4:37 PM under clear blue skies. Crescent shadows on the sun appeared approximately 30 mins before totality. I made a sequence of that phase using a solar filter over the camera lens. During totality the filter was removed to capture the sun’s corona and prominences. The solar filter protects the camera’s sensor from damage, but it can’t capture diamond rings or bailey’s beads which occur just before totality.
As the sun vanished behind the moon’s shadow, the temperature dropped rapidly and darkness fell. No doubt there were quite a number of confused animals and birds on the island.
During totality, reduced light over the ocean created the illusion of a sunset during the blue hour. It was short lived as less than a minute later, full daylight was back in effect.
